“My name is Yuki, I am 20 years old, and I come from China. I started my high school at CGHS in the last term of Year 10, and it has already been four years since then. Choosing CGHS was a decision made by my parents after careful consideration. Although I have never said it before, it was a wise choice. There are many reasons why I like CGHS, I will pick two parts in detail to talk about. Firstly, the beautiful environment. In my hometown we don’t have girls or boys schools, so the experience at Christchurch Girls’ High School is very special for me. In my imagination, I thought the girls’ school would be strict. Actually, CGHS is a quiet and serene place, with flowers and rivers. You can sit outside and enjoy the sun at lunchtime. There are many lawns and trees in the school. Especially in spring and summer when you see the green environment and hear the birds, the sound will make people feel at peace. What I like most are the teachers. For example, every time I go to class, I will have some questions. When everyone is doing exercises on their own, I will ask the teacher for help. The teacher will sit next to you and answer them, the atmosphere of the class will not make you feel pressured. Although my English level may not be high, I can also be well integrated into the classroom. The teacher will take care of the students who are relatively weak in English, so there is no need to worry too much in class.
When I first came to school, the thing which made me feel the most different was course selection. In China, we don’t choose subjects on our own, all of them are compulsory subjects, which is different compared to NZ. We could choose any subjects which we like, also there are plenty of activities that you could do. This is an important process of discovering our hobbies. The choice of subjects largely decides what you are going to do in university. As the year level increases, the subject choices become very important. Therefore, my suggestion is to ask senior students for details and then choose your subject, or it is really helpful to communicate with the international teacher or the subject teacher. The credit system is also different from China, in China we only have a midterm and final test which will be recorded, but in NZ every test has credits(unless the teacher says it is a practice test), every time you pass the exam you will get the credits. The advantage of the credit system is to disperse the pressure, and there will be no situation where the success or failure will be determined by one exam. To know more about how the credits system works it is good if you could talk with senior students as they have already been through this.
CGHS is a very good school. If you need a good environment where you can learn English, Christchurch Girls’ High School is a good choice. You may feel a little difficult at the beginning, but this feeling shows that you are immersing in this kind of English atmosphere. After you are familiar with it, you will feel very comfortable in school. Teachers will take very care of every student. In school, you can meet many girls of the same age with different personalities. Everyone communicates, learns, and joins activities, such as the pink day and sports day, etc. The school organizes some large-scale activities every year. I know that it’s difficult to take the first step, and it’s also difficult to speak in the very beginning, but you could give yourself this opportunity in school to communicate with international students first, and then slowly try to chat with local girls, one step at a time, you will find that your English is improving every time you communicate. Finally, I wish you all a happy life in CGHS”
