The passing of John Wilson

This week Christchurch Girls’ High School/Te Kura o Hine Waiora remembers a former teacher and colleague, John Wilson. John taught Social Studies and Geography at CGHS for 37 years and then spent many years after his retirement relieving and supervising examinations.

Christchurch Girls’ High School/Te Kura o Hine Waiora remembers John as a wonderful teacher, head of department, dean, cricket coach and colleague. He had a particular passion for the West Coast and over the years, thousands of students benefited from this on the annual coal mining and dairy farming field trips that he organised. John sadly passed away on 17 October. He will be remembered by many as not only a great teacher but a very talented musician and drummer.

On his retirement, he played a drum solo at the final Christchurch Girls’ High School/Te Kura o Hine Waiora prizegiving at the Town Hall and many remember the electric atmosphere in the room that evening…he almost lifted the roof off!

Rest in peace, John.
